~ the adventurers' club ~
Mount Keira

Saturday 27th July 2007.

7.00AM. An early start for the adventurers ~ the best part of the day. The adventurers met at base camp ~ situated in Mount Pleasant. The seasoned team was joined by new adventurer, Angel.

Tumbled boulders

Angel led the team on a hike up the Mount Pleasant bush track, heading towards the Mount Keira ring track. Their objective was the summit of Mount Keira followed by a circumnavigation of the mount itself.

The climb was quite a challenge at times yet each adventurer tapped into their mental and physical reserves and met each stage of the climb head on.

On the track

Upon completion of their first objective they took on the ring track. The walk was through the rich sub tropical rainforest of the Illawarra escarpment.

Sub Tropical Climb

The adventurers could not help but relish in the natural beauty of the climb as the weather was bright and sunny. Angel's intuitive navigational skills and expert local knowledge came into play as the adventurers conquered the track. They reached the summit track in good order and they began the ascent to the top.

Broker's Nose

Upn reaching the summit they could see the peaks of previous conquests, Broker's Nose and Mount Kembla.

At the summit of Mount Keira the five climbers took in the magnificent Illawarra view.

Moment of achievement

The adventurers posed for a photo at the peak and then they began the descent.

A fresh wind had sprung up from the west however this was no problem for the team.

The wind

They decided to take the Dave Walsh track down the western rim of the mount. It was a steep and somewhat challenging task for the trekkers.

Tenacity

Horse and Diamond led by example, exhibiting courage, drive and determination as they charged down the rugged slope. They negotiated massive boulders, fallen trees and narrow ravines.

Mastery

The ring track was reached and the adventurers turned south and began a counterclockwise circumnavigation of the mountain.

They passed through some of the greenest and vibrant vegetation of the Illawarra escarpment.

The journey soon took them around the southern and eastern faces of the mountain and in good time they reached Mount Pleasant.

Upon reaching base camp they all tucked into a hearty and healthy breakfast of fresh fruit, yoghurt, weet-bix, crumpets, orange juice and tea. Thanks Angel! A legendary adventurer!
