Mount Kembla

Sunday 27th May 2007.

Larry jumped in the club car and drove across Figtree to collect Diamond and then Horse. He had been running late. They put petrol in the club car at the Caltex in Unanderra. $40.00. Paid for by petty cash.

Club Car

They took the drive up Cordeaux Road through Mount Kembla Village and they were soon at the commencement point for the journey.

The Climb

It is a 1.5 kilometre journey to the peak. The climb is rated as moderate.

The details

The skies were blue and the weather was fine. Not cold. Not hot. Perfect weather for bush-walking and climbing.

The initial stages of the climb were through typical escarpment bush with eucalyptus trees and scrub about the three adventurers. The call of a lyrebird broke the crisp morning silence.

The bush

The three adventurers paused from time to time as adventurer Larry was not in peak condition.

At several points in the journey Larry had to contest with the scaling of vertical sandstone inclines and the proximity of unfenced edges. With the help of his fellow seasoned adventurers Larry met these challenges head on and proceeded on with the climb.

Once the three had reached the top of the mountain Larry had the newly found fortitude to lead the three across the top towards the lookout on the eastern face of the mountain.

Visitors' book entry

Once at the summit the three men recorded their names in the visitors' book for posterity.

The summit had been reached. Mental and physical boundaries had been exceeded.

Pause and reflect

They marched across to the lookout and reflected for a moment as they took in the view of the glistening Illawarra below.

Diamond, Horse and Larry

Larry preserved the moment with his Nikon camera. Photographs were taken and the return journey was commenced.

The southern Illawarra

Diaomond led the team on the descent and he pioneered an alternative route down the mountains south western face.

Larry captured the return journey with more photographs.

They reached their commencement point with spirits buouyed with a sense of achievement. A sense of determination and direction filled the air and the three adventurers have promised that their quest for the edge will continue into the future.
